Valkyria Chronicles - "Duel with Maximillian"

There comes a time when we have to take a stand and fight for what we're worth. That couldn't possibly be any more true than in the battle against Maximillian's super-tank, the Batomys. This super-tank is the size of a building and is equipped with 6 turrets which cover a 360 degree range, as well as two surge guns (one in the front, and one in the back).

At the beginning of the battle, there are around 6 stragglers off to the cliffs to the left of the Batomys. I am able to  pick them off with two soldiers. The first time I tried this, I move my Shocktrooper, Nina, up to dispatch an enemy Scout hiding behind a wall. Next, I moved up my Sniper, Catherine, to dispose of one of the two enemy Shocktroopers on the far end of the cliff. I thought all was well. I had destroyed all 6 turrets and were about to attack the tank's power generators when Sylveria showed up with the Valkyra Lance and 6 more troops. Catherine and Nina were killed, and it actually pained me to see them die. They are a part of my team.

Slyveria then continued to decimate my numbers, leaving only Elysse and Welkins alive. That was my first attempt.

I am eager for a rematch. And this time, we will win.

Valkyria Chronicles - A Match Made in Heaven?

To explain this shortly from the beginning, my dad got a membership in the Blockbuster online gig. Personally, I never was a fan of getting things mailed to you, when you can just go to the store and get it, but this was actually pretty cool. So anyway, I ordered Valkyria Chronicles a few days ago (unlimited online rentals) and I received it in the mail last night. Interested in how the game is, I put it in the PS3 and started the installation.

Actually backtrack a bit. I had to download a 34 MB update. No biggie. While it was downloading, I was playing 4Story with one of my friends. Anyway, after the download finished, I installed the game to reduce load times and such.

By the way, the last few days have been really RPG-like. Especially yesterday. I was playing .hack//infection pretty much all day yesterday. Anyway, back on topic.

When I finally started playing Valkyria Chronicles, I first realized how gorgeous the game looks. It has a cell-shaded anime art-style with comic-style effects that pop up on screen. The music was great, and the voice-acting was believable (I was playing on Japanese dub, simply because I like it better). The real meat of the game, though, is the gameplay, and it is a blast.

First off, this is an RPG, but not like Final Fantasy. This game is a tactical, turn-based RPG. A perfect match. There are many gameplay mechanics such as different character classes. However, a cool thing about the different character classes is that even though many are the same class, non of them are the same. They each have their individual pros and cons which you must use to effectively overcome your enemy.

In order to defeat the enemy, you must strategize ahead. This isn't Call of Duty where one person can take down an entire team. You must use team-work and coordination. For example, you might use a Scout to run ahead and take down an Anti-Tank in order to let your Tanks roll in. This in turn would provide cover for your Scout behind the Tank. From then on, the Tank can take out clusters of enemies using a Mortar Strike. The strategies you can use to allow each class to complement each other are limitless. There are even some characters that do better when around certain other characters and thus receive boosts in their stats.

I just love this game so much and I just barely started playing it. Overall, I'd say if you're into RPG's of any sort, check this game out. Even if you just like tactical games too. This game is a beast to behold.

What I Do

Another day, another long marathon of boredom. There really needs to be a cure for this infectious disease that I have to suffer through. What is there to do? I need to find something interesting to bide my time.

Four or five hours have passed just like that. I have a feeling that my spring break is going to suck. On a brighter note, I finally got Uncharted 2's multiplayer to work. I also played a couple of matches in Bioshock 2's multiplayer. I have to say, not too bad multiplayer for Bioshock 2. Uncharted 2 on the other hand is a beast. It's really fun to play.

On another note, I'm still feeling the residual effects of my allergies to pollen. On another note (how many notes do I have?), there was that earth-quake in Japan and the massive tsunami that swept the entire Pacific ocean. Looks like mother Nature is pissed. I can't blame her.

Uncharted 2 Multiplayer Problems

So I recently purchased a copy of Uncharted 2 and found that I had to download and install 9 updates. So I did. After downloading the updates, I tried to get into the multiplayer but I am greeted with an 'Error Syncing Models' message. Looking online, I tried to find a fix for this problem. Others have apparently experienced the same problem as I have and have fixed it by deleting the update files and re-installing them. Naughty Dog has even posted this fix on their website. So I tried this. Twice. Nothing. It still shows the 'Error Syncing Models' screen. Anyone have this problem and know how to fix it? It'd be greatly appreciated.

Resistance 3 - Multiplayer News

Well here we are. Having some information on Battlefield 3 earlier this month (last month?), DICE got everyone pumped up with the return of one of the best franchises on the market. With Killzone 3's release in late February, there was only one more thing to come into everyone's mind: What will become of Insomniac's first-person shooter, Resistance 3.

To start off, Insomniac has apparently listened to the complaints about Resistance 2 and worked hard to alleviate  the problems. They did this, by having 16-player multiplayer.

Ouch. Compared to their previous installments in the franchise, a 16-player battle seems like a minor skirmish. However, it is still unclear as whether or not this will actually balance out the gameplay online, seeing as one of the complaints with Resistance 2's multiplayer is that it was too chaotic and messy online to have any fun. (On a side note, I thought this too).

Insomniac states that having 16-players online would allow them to add more details to the levels and have a more focus gameplay. No doubt this will still be a big drawback to the fans (the first game having 40 players), but the way that Insomniac describes it seems like it really is shaping up to be a really good multiplayer experience.

The weapon wheel is back, allowing players to carry more than two weapons (a sigh of relief from the fans). There will also be a new leveling system that will replace the big grind of Resistance 2 (two years later, and I still haven't unlocked everything). This includes new Berserks and power-ups such as "Doppelganger" which shoots out a holographic decoy to confuse enemies. Character customization is also a big part of the multiplayer experience, with the player being able to allocate points to improve their play-style. Sounds like the multiplayer is shaping up to be a good contender, but a question runs through my mind: seeing COD: Black Ops's success, is Insomniac trying to cash in on the customization craze?

A word of advice Insomniac, don't try to be too much like the competition. It stagnates the market. Us gamers need something new and exciting, not another COD clone. Don't be afraid to take some leaps of faith here and there. Killzone 3 tried to become something it wasn't. Don't make the same mistake.

Infamous 2 - Make It Your Own?

Sucker Punch has announced a great new feature in the upcoming sequel to their next-gen franchise, Infamous 2. This new feature will allow you to customize levels and create your own type of missions, even going so far as to allow you to manipulate virtually any prop available in the game. This is great news that they are allowing user-created content on their game, and is something that developers should definitely take note of.
